About Us
Emily Andersen – General Manager
Emily joined Extant in June 2011 after moving to London from her home town of Melbourne in late 2010.
After working in journalism, student and trade unionism and youth media, Emily became General Manager and Co-CEO of Australian young writers’ organisation Express Media in 2007. As part of this role, she oversaw the publication of youth literary journal Voiceworks, managed an Emerging Writers’ Festival, and worked with other literary organisations and artists to help develop the Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature.
Emily has a passion for community arts and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Cultural Development from the Victorian College of the Arts, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from RMIT University.
In 2004, Emily founded political theatre collective the Union Players. Emily wrote the play Friday Night at the Union, and co-wrote Satisfaction and The Agreement, all of which were performed by the Union Players at Melbourne Fringe Festivals between 2005 and 2007. She also undertook a poetry mentorship with late Australian poet Dorothy Porter in 2004, and has had poems published in several Melbourne-based publications.
Since arriving in London, Emily has enjoyed a temporary stint as administrator of a policy conference at criminal justice charity Revolving Doors Agency, and has volunteered as a young writers’ mentor at the Ministry of Stories.
